An Original Collaborative Solo Adventure

Labeled as a “self-coop” puzzle game, Gloomy Eyes pairs up a zombie boy known as Gloomy and a living girl named Nena as they begin an mission to restore sunlight to their shadowy realm. Their appearance resembles collectible figures mixed with the puppets from a Laika film. Their pale-skinned and baggy-eyed style is influenced by the visual style of Burtonesque cinema, and the plot is a classic suitable for everyone journey. The duo develops an unbreakable friendship over the span of the game’s 14 chapters as Nena attempts to show to her religious guardian that, hey, maybe living-impaired beings can be friendly.

Creative Gameplay Systems

This unique description stems from the game’s interactive problem-solving. After Gloomy and Nena encounter each other, you’ll swap among the budding companions to solve puzzles and advance through the areas. As an undead, Gloomy can’t walk through the illumination of a lamppost, while Nena will get snatched up by idle zombies unless a lamp is shone on them.

They must cooperate closely — well, you’ll use them in tandem — to complete stages. Nena could adjust or momentarily deactivate illumination to create passages for Gloomy, while the thoughtful boy will employ his undead power to move objects in the environment, revealing ways for Nena.

Engaging Level Design

The brain-teasers bring to mind a bit of The Gardens Between, in the way the areas are floating, model-like designs that the view moves across in conjunction with your heroes. Gloomy Eyes’ environments are very enjoyable, leading the companions around a carnival and through a spooky mansion, among other locations. There’s a “diorama view” feature that permits you to zoom out and turn the areas, simultaneously to appreciate the visuals and hunt for ways that may not have been obvious.

Slight Hiccups and Complete Gameplay

Here lies one of the only hiccups with Gloomy Eyes. Like other titles with a static view, sometimes it's unclear where the characters can and cannot go. You may need to simply collide with a multiple different items to determine which ones are interactable, as the game doesn't always indicate.

Nonetheless, those small obstacles don't obstruct of a spooky-cute fun adventure. Gloomy Eyes has a compact length, with about several hours worth of brain-teasers. Subsequent stages combine light sneaking and exciting moments with the problem-solving, as Gloomy Eyes advances to a rewarding — and somewhat unexpected — conclusion.

Availability and Summary

Those shying away from the frights of fear-inducing releases won’t want to miss Gloomy Eyes. You can find it on Nintendo platform, PS5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X, and is presently discounted for a discount on online stores.

This charming title is available on several consoles and offers a delightful choice for gamers in search of spooky entertainment without fear factor.
